Contraceptive sponges help prevent STDs. (sexually-transmitted diseases) (RX Marketplace)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--A new survey shows that contraceptive sponges and diaphrams provide significantly more protection for women against gonorrhea and trichomoniasis than does a condom.

"Women need to know there are contraceptive choices they control that might confer better protection against sexually transmitted diseases [STDs] than condoms," says Michael Rosenberg, who directed the study.
